Imagine a neighborhood where homes aren’t the typical boxy structures but instead, resemble something straight out of a sci-fi movie—smooth, round spheres nestled among the trees. Welcome to Bolwoningen, a community in Den Bosch, The Netherlands, where houses look more like futuristic pods than traditional buildings. Designed by visionary architect Dries Kreijkamp in the late 1970s, these spherical homes have become icons of innovative design. Beyond their striking appearance, the Bolwoningen reflect a time when architects sought to challenge norms, prioritize sustainability, and rethink the way we live. Let’s dive into the story behind these one-of-a-kind homes and discover what makes them so special.
Historical Context
The 1970s and 1980s were transformative decades, characterized by social, political, and environmental shifts. As urban sprawl accelerated, concerns about the impact of rapid city growth and rising energy consumption became central in urban planning discussions. Environmental movements gained momentum, urging society to reconsider how buildings interacted with their surroundings. Simultaneously, the oil crisis of the 1970s heightened awareness about resource scarcity, pushing for more energy-efficient and sustainable living solutions.
Amid this backdrop, architects and designers began to challenge the rigid, utilitarian structures that dominated post-war architecture. They sought to break free from the standardization that had defined much of mid-century urban development. Dries Kreijkamp, the mind behind Bolwoningen, was deeply influenced by these cultural shifts. Drawing inspiration from countercultural movements that emphasized a closer connection to nature and a simpler, more sustainable way of living, he envisioned homes that were not only energy-efficient but also fostered a new relationship between inhabitants and their environment. The Bolwoningen project emerged as a response to these evolving values, offering a fresh perspective on how residential spaces could coexist with nature while embracing futuristic design.
Architectural Design
The Bolwoningen’s architectural design reimagines the way people interact with their living spaces, challenging the conventional boundaries of residential architecture. Dries Kreijkamp deliberately chose a spherical shape, which stands in stark contrast to the straight lines and angles that dominate traditional buildings. This organic form promotes a sense of harmony and balance, blending with natural surroundings rather than imposing upon them. The curved walls and rounded interiors create a more intimate, flowing living experience, where residents feel connected to both the indoor space and the outdoors.
The spherical structure isn’t just an aesthetic choice—it also serves functional purposes. The aerodynamic shape helps to reduce wind resistance, making the houses more stable and resilient to harsh weather conditions. Additionally, the compact nature of a sphere allows for efficient use of space, minimizing the building’s physical footprint while maximizing interior volume. Each Bolwoning measures about 5.5 meters in diameter, providing a cozy yet spacious living area. The homes rest on cylindrical bases, elevating them slightly above ground to offer additional privacy and protection from moisture. Large, strategically placed windows ensure that natural light permeates every corner, creating a bright and inviting atmosphere while offering panoramic views of the surrounding environment.
Construction Process
Building the Bolwoningen was a pioneering endeavor that combined innovative materials and modern construction techniques with traditional craftsmanship. At the heart of the process were the prefabricated fiberglass-reinforced polyester shells, chosen for their lightweight yet robust properties. These shells were manufactured in controlled environments off-site, ensuring precision and consistency in quality before being transported to the construction site. Prefabrication not only reduced production costs but also sped up the construction timeline, making it a more efficient and environmentally friendly approach.
Once the shells arrived on-site, they were carefully positioned atop cylindrical concrete bases that anchored them securely to the ground. The installation required precise coordination between engineers, contractors, and artisans, as even minor misalignments could impact the structural integrity. Bolting the spheres to their bases was a delicate operation that demanded accuracy to maintain the stability of the entire structure. The collaboration between Kreijkamp’s design team and the construction crew ensured that each sphere met both functional and aesthetic standards.
Additionally, the construction process sought to minimize the environmental impact on the site, preserving as much of the natural landscape as possible. By elevating the structures, Kreijkamp’s team ensured that the Bolwoningen left a minimal footprint on the earth, allowing vegetation and wildlife to coexist alongside these futuristic homes.
Principal Characteristics
The Bolwoningen boasts several distinctive features. Their iconic spherical shape optimizes space use, with no wasted corners or awkward angles. Built-in furniture and multifunctional spaces maximize functionality and comfort within the compact footprint. Large windows flood the interior with natural light, creating a bright and airy atmosphere. The sleek, white finish and elevated bases enhance their aesthetic and environmental connection
Technologies and Materials Used
The Bolwoningen relied on innovative techniques, sustainable materials, and modern technologies. Prefabricated fiberglass-reinforced polyester shells offered strength, durability, and weather resistance. Prefabrication minimized construction time and ensured quality control. The project prioritized sustainability with environmentally friendly materials and design principles. The emphasis on natural light and ventilation reduced reliance on artificial systems. Advanced insulation materials, energy-efficient appliances, double-glazed windows optimized energy performance.
Impact and Legacy
The Bolwoningen have inspired architects and designers worldwide. Their unconventional form and sustainable design principles challenged traditional housing notions. Initially met with skepticism, the Bolwoningen garnered recognition and acclaim over time. Their sustainable design benefits became apparent, and they are now celebrated as icons of architectural innovation. The Bolwoningen continues to inspire new generations of designers to push the boundaries of residential design.
Bolwoningen’s Significance
The Bolwoningen aren’t just homes; they’re a testament to the power of imagination and the courage to defy conventions. They remind us that the future of architecture doesn’t have to be limited by straight lines or traditional materials. Instead, it can be a playground for creativity, where bold shapes and sustainable principles come together to create something truly unique. As we face new challenges in urban living and environmental preservation, the story of the Bolwoningen inspires us to think differently—because sometimes, the best way forward is by embracing the unconventional.

Very nice and more than complete article. I live in one of them since 2011 and I can assure you that it’s a great house.
There is one important note. The original design and prototype was made out of polyester, as told in the article. But the 50 houses that were actually built are made out of fiberglass-reinforced concrete. This was due to regulations (fire safety). Dries Kreijkamp was not happy with this decision, but he accepted it.
