Fulford-By-The-Sea Monument, historic structure in North Miami Beach, Florida

Engineering a Landmark: How the 1925 Fulford-By-The-Sea Monument Became a Florida Historic Icon

At the corner of NE 172nd Street and 23rd Avenue stands a monument that has charmed locals and intrigued visitors for nearly 100 years. Picture Miami-Dade in 1925: the air alive with ambition, fortunes being made overnight, and grand buildings springing up as symbols of prosperity. Out of that electric atmosphere rose the Fulford-By-The-Sea Monument—a spectacular gateway designed to dazzle investors and future residents alike. With its unicorn busts, domed mosaic roof, illuminated fountain, and commanding 32-foot height, it embodied both the extravagance of the age and Florida’s soaring optimism.

Time, however, tested its resilience. Hurricanes, economic downturns, and periods of neglect threatened its survival. Yet, the monument endured. Miami-Dade County declared it a historic site in 1983, and it earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. Thanks to preservation projects—most notably in 1987 and 2019—it continues to tell its story. Today, it is not only a nostalgic glimpse into the roaring land boom but also a testament to the power of restoration. Without such efforts, icons like this would fade, leaving our history incomplete.

    Historical Context & Origins

Before we zoom into the monument itself, it helps to step back and picture the environment that made its creation possible. Florida in the early 20th century was a magnet for dreamers, investors, and builders, all chasing prosperity in the sunshine state.

    The 1920s Florida Land Boom

The Florida Land Boom of the 1920s was an extraordinary chapter in American history. Post–World War I travelers, unable or unwilling to return to Europe, set their sights on Florida. Sunshine, beaches, and promises of quick wealth pulled them southward. Land prices soared, and the state’s population swelled faster than any in the nation. By 1925, demand for new communities, modern infrastructure, and showpiece architecture seemed endless.

From Subdivision Gateway to City Landmark

Developers Merle C. Tebbetts and Edgar C. Linn envisioned the Fulford-By-The-Sea Monument as a dramatic entryway to a grand subdivision. Its design promised elegance, prestige, and opportunity. Although additional gateways were planned, the financial crash of the late 1920s halted expansion. What remained was a single, ornate monument—one that would eventually outlast the real estate dreams that inspired it.

    Architectural & Structural Form

The Fulford-By-The-Sea Monument was never meant to blend quietly into its surroundings. Its style and craftsmanship were chosen with great intention, designed to both impress and endure. The following details highlight what makes its architecture so distinctive.

    Classical Revival Aesthetics

With its Classical Revival design, the monument borrowed heavily from Greek and Roman traditions. Symmetry, arches, and stately columns established its timeless look. Yet whimsical details made it unique: unicorn busts, a shimmering mosaic dome, and a lively fountain. Together, these features created a spectacle that was both sophisticated and playful.

    Materials, Dimensions & Structural Integrity

The monument was built from cast stone, shaped to resemble fine Indiana limestone. Rising 32 feet above the ground, it anchored itself in a circular pool spanning 30 feet. Steps, urns, and multicolored fountain lights added flair. Despite harsh weather and decades of wear, it has retained much of its original strength, a credit to thoughtful restoration.

    Design & Construction Team

Architect Harry J. Beshgetoorian lent his vision and talent to the monument’s creation. Known for collaborations with leading architects of the time, Beshgetoorian infused the project with ambition and refinement. The Florida Cities Finance Company, determined to showcase the height of design excellence, backed its construction as part of their grand Fulford-By-The-Sea development.

    Preservation, Renovations & Florida Recertification

Time inevitably leaves its mark on even the most enduring structures. Yet through determined restoration projects, the Fulford-By-The-Sea Monument has been carefully nurtured back to life more than once.

    1987 & 2019 Restoration Milestones

The city’s sixtieth birthday in 1987 sparked the first major restoration. Cracks were mended, colors refreshed, and the structure regained its vibrancy. Decades later, in 2019, further work was carried out to ensure its future. Repairs addressed structural issues and revived decorative features. These milestones reflect the dedication of both city leaders and community members to protect their heritage.

    Legal Status & Documentation

Recognition came in two major forms: Miami-Dade’s historic site designation in 1983 and national registry listing in 2010. Such designations not only celebrate the monument’s cultural value but also help secure funding and attention for preservation projects.

    Visiting Fulford-By-The-Sea Today

For residents and tourists alike, the monument remains a proud emblem of North Miami Beach. It stands as a picturesque reminder of bold dreams and architectural artistry. To walk near it today is to feel connected to the roaring twenties while appreciating the foresight of those who fought to save it.

Preserving Heritage: A Commitment to Future Generations

The Fulford-By-The-Sea Monument is more than stone and mosaic; it is a vessel of memory. Preserving such landmarks ensures future generations inherit not just stories but living symbols of resilience and creativity. Eastern Engineering Group, though not directly tied to this project, has played a vital role in similar preservation efforts. Their expertise highlights how engineering and design safeguard history, ensuring iconic landmarks endure as reminders of where we have been—and what we choose to protect.
