From Army Aspirant to Engineering Expert: The Journey of a Structural Engineer

A young man’s dream, a passion ignited, a life transformed – these are the defining elements of Edher Quiroz’s remarkable journey, our newest Director of Structural Repairs at Eastern Engineering Group. From the crossroads of a potential military career to the pinnacle of structural engineering expertise, Edher’s story is anything but ordinary.

Early Life and Inspiration

Every man has a story behind him, and when we were asked to interview Edher, we were filled with eager anticipation to uncover him.

So, as with any great tale, let’s start from the beginning.

Structural Engineer - Edher Quiroz

Born in Honduras and raised in Miami, Edher’s early life was shaped by a strong work ethic and a deep passion for learning. This innate curiosity, coupled with a fascination for the sciences and mathematics, would ultimately guide him toward the world of engineering.

Life, however, is not always a predictable journey. His story took an unexpected turn when he found himself at a crossroads, torn between pursuing his passion for engineering and the allure of a military career. Yet, in the midst of this dilemma, a life-changing event occurred – the birth of his daughter.  This pivotal moment shifted Edher’s perspective, reaffirming his commitment to a career that would allow him to build a secure future for his family.

Career Progression and Key Achievements

Edher’s engineering career began with a bang, not in the military sense, but with a meticulous eye for detail! Fresh out of Florida International University (FIU)  in 2013, he landed his first role as an inspector of existing structures. This might not sound glamorous, but for him, it was the perfect launching pad. He thrived on the challenge of dissecting buildings, his sharp mind and analytical skills allowing him to identify and solve even the trickiest structural issues.

His dedication to his craft and his ability to find solutions where others saw problems quickly earned him a reputation for excellence. This wasn’t just about spotting cracks in walls (although that’s important too!). He was developing a keen understanding of how structures functioned, the forces they withstood, and the importance of ensuring their safety and longevity.

This impressive start to his career was just the beginning. His journey in the engineering industry was about to take him from meticulous inspector to project manager extraordinaire.

My First Project

“My first large-scale project was working as a project manager on the construction of two new homes in South Beach,” Edher recalled. “These were considered high-end homes, with market values at the time of $4 and $6 million, respectively. The work was complex, requiring expertise in all disciplines, including architecture, structural engineering, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, civil, and more.”

This challenging project proved to be a pivotal moment in his career, allowing him to hone his project management skills and gain invaluable experience in coordinating multiple teams and disciplines. He faced numerous challenges, from ensuring adherence to strict timelines and budgets to navigating complex technical issues. But through it all, he persevered, demonstrating his ability to handle pressure and make sound decisions.

Edher’s Journey to Eastern Engineering Group

Edher’s impressive start as an inspector laid the foundation for a thriving career in engineering. But his story doesn’t end there!  Let’s take a closer look at his professional journey and the key milestones that led him to Eastern Engineering Group.

Between 2013 and 2017, he transitioned from an inspector to a project manager, showcasing his versatility and expertise in the engineering field. His tenure at Inspection Engineers Inc. provided a solid foundation, while his role at Peterbilt Construction Inc. allowed him to spearhead high-end residential projects, refining his skills in team coordination. Joining The Falcon Group Engineering in 2017 further cemented his reputation as a structural engineering expert, demonstrating his ability to navigate complex challenges. These experiences paved the way for his current position at Eastern Engineering Group.

So, what exactly does Edher do at Eastern Engineering Group? Buckle up, because it’s an impressive list!

A Day in the Life of Edher Quiroz, Director of Structural Repairs

Imagine Edher’s desk – a hub of activity!  Here’s a glimpse into the key responsibilities that keep him busy:

As Director, he oversees a team of professionals, ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget. He acts as a bridge between the company and clients, keeping communication clear and consistent. His responsibilities also include conducting crucial inspections, preparing proposals, reviewing budgets, and ensuring top-quality work from project managers and inspectors. Additionally, he plays a vital role in report generation, preparing repair drawings and specifications manuals – essentially, the blueprint for ensuring the structural integrity of buildings.

Expertise in Structural Inspection and Repair

Our interview with Edher continued, where we asked about the services offer at Eastern Engineering Group. Here’s a summary of what we discovered:

The team within the structural repairs department provides a range of assessments, from cursory visual inspections to more comprehensive preliminary and detailed evaluations. The cursory assessments involve a simple visual examination of a building’s overall condition, often used to prioritize maintenance and repair needs or identify areas requiring further study.

The preliminary assessments, on the other hand, involve a more in-depth process. This includes a site visit to familiarize with the property, review available documentation, and interview relevant parties, culminating in a preliminary report of findings and recommendations. For the most thorough evaluations, Eastern Engineering Group’s inspectors conduct detailed assessments. These expansive reviews involve a deep dive into the building’s documentation, component classification, field investigations, testing, and comprehensive reporting.

Additionally, Eastern Engineering Group provides Building Structural Recertification services to ensure that the building is structurally safe for its continue occupancy.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Structural Engineers

As we reached the end, we asked what advice he would offer to young engineers interested in a career in structural engineering. His response was both inspiring and insightful. “Pursue your dreams and be persistent,” he encouraged. “The most difficult things are often the most rewarding.

As we reflect on Edher’s remarkable accomplishments, it becomes clear that the path to success in structural engineering is paved not only with technical mastery but also with the courage to embrace challenges and the resilience to overcome obstacles. Edher’s words echo the very essence of what it means to be an engineer – to tackle complex problems, to innovate, and to leave an indelible mark on the built environment.

As the next generation of structural engineers prepares to take the reins, they would do well to heed Edher’s advice and embrace the challenges that lie ahead. For it is in the pursuit of the difficult, the complex, and the seemingly insurmountable, that the most profound breakthroughs and the most lasting legacies are born.
