Through modular, floating platforms anchored in the sea, Oceanix Busan proposes a departure from traditional urban planning, offering a scalable solution replicable in coastal cities worldwide. This approach mitigates risks of sea-level rise and extreme weather events while fostering a deeper connection between inhabitants and the marine environment, promoting stewardship and appreciation for the planet’s resources.

Architectural Design

Oceanix Busan’s architectural design embodies technical innovation across three building types, vital to the project’s vision of sustainable urban living. 

The Lodging Platform, attracting visitors, integrates advanced structural and environmental elements. Guestrooms optimize natural light and air flow, reducing reliance on artificial energy. On-site hydroponic systems ensure fresh, organic produce year-round. Solar panels and wind turbines generate renewable energy, while a skylit greenhouse uses passive solar heating and rainwater harvesting. Spanning levels 1 to 5 with a maximum height of 20 meters, the platform covers a 6,500 square meter footprint and offers 30,000 square meters of top-side space.

The Research Platform, a hub for collaboration and exploration, showcases sustainable technologies.  A ground-level entrance leads to a winter garden with advanced HVAC systems. A forest of hydroponic towers cultivates food efficiently. Spanning five levels with a maximum height of 25 meters, the platform covers 10,500 square meters and offers 37,000 square meters of top-side space.

The Living Platform, promoting sustainable living, integrates amenities for community interaction. Passive solar design maximizes natural light, while cultural programming fosters a sense of belonging. The community backyard serves as a gathering space Spanning levels 4 to 5 with a maximum height of 20 meters, the platform covers an 8,500 square meters footprint and offers 34,000 square meters of top-side space.

Structural Design

Oceanix Busan’s structural design focuses on stability, durability, and adaptability to the marine environment. Engineered to withstand wind, waves, and currents, the structures utilize advanced materials like reinforced concrete and steel for the floating platforms, ensuring a robust foundation. Adjustable pylons and buoyant foundations mitigate sea-level rise and extreme weather risks, allowing platforms to rise and fall with changing water levels. Weight distribution and load-bearing capacity are carefully considered to support diverse functions and activities.

Sustainable Features

Oceanix Busan integrates renewable energy sources like solar panels and wind turbines, along with innovative water management systems to minimize environmental impact. Rainwater capture and treatment reduce freshwater reliance and minimize ocean runoff. Waste reduction strategies, including composting and recycling, enhance sustainability, ensuring efficient resource use. 

Community and Amenities

Oceanix Busan fosters an inclusive community with diverse amenities promoting connection and belonging. Communal green spaces, recreational facilities, educational programs, and cultural offerings enhance residents’ quality of life.
