Air Traffic Control Tower – Rickenbacker International Airport

The Air Traffic Control Tower is an essential component of Rickenbacker International Airport in Columbus, Ohio. This structure plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient movement of aircraft in and around the airport. Equipped with advanced communication systems, air traffic controllers stationed in the tower monitor and direct the flow of air traffic, guiding pilots during takeoff, landing, and taxiing. The tower was opened in 2016 and has been a vital part of the airport’s operations, ensuring the safety and efficiency of air travel for the past several years.

CTBX Aviation, established in 2004, stands as a prominent Architectural/Engineering firm with a distinct focus on the holistic planning, design, and diligent oversight of state-of-the-art control towers. Boasting a diverse team of aviation traffic control tower consultants encompassing talents ranging from architects and engineers to designers, graphics artists, estimators, and construction administrators, CTBX Aviation offers an unmatched depth of expertise in crafting both functional and groundbreaking solutions for control towers.

Eastern Engineering Group undertook the extensive structural engineering for this groundbreaking project, which encompassed the intricate process of demolishing an existing eight-story control tower and an attached three-level support building. This was followed by the construction of a new eight-story control tower located at 111 East Airport Drive in Columbus, Ohio, serving the Rickenbacker Inland Port. The superstructure was predominantly comprised of precast concrete panels and hollow core slabs, while the substructure boasted a shallow Mat Foundation.

Mr. Lally has been an Airport Planner and Professional Engineer since 1973, bringing over four decades of invaluable experience to the aviation industry. What’s even more intriguing is that he holds an FAA Licensed Private Pilot certification, demonstrating his deep-rooted passion and commitment to the world of aviation. This unique blend of expertise and personal involvement undoubtedly contributed to the project’s success and innovation in air traffic control tower design.
