School of Architecture – Miami, Univ.

The School of Architecture at the University of Miami proudly boasts its 20,000-square-foot LEED-certified studio building as a masterpiece of modern architectural education. This innovative structure, with its exposed glass and concrete framework, not only provides a functional space but also serves as an invaluable teaching tool. It vividly illustrates the fundamental principles of modern architecture, construction, and sustainability. The building’s design is a daring departure from convention, resembling an oversized shed with a vaulted roof that appears to float 18 feet above the ground, supported by slender steel columns and minimal fixed walls.

One striking feature is the single, gracefully curved concrete wall that welcomes visitors at the main public transit entrance. The roof itself, a marvel of thin-shell concrete engineering, subtly bends and warps in response to Miami’s scorching heat, creating an elegant arc that adds depth to the structure’s silhouette. Beyond offering effective shading for the transparent east and west facades, this bowed roof also serves as the defining element of the building’s distinctive design. The School of Architecture at the University of Miami continues to push boundaries and inspire future architects through this extraordinary architectural achievement.
